If your organization has any other ideas for partnership opportunities with our researchers but could not find any suitable framework from the categories above, please send details to the Knowledge Exchange Office. Suggestions and enquiries will be re-directed to the relevant Faculties, departments or units of the University, which may contact you direct if it is considered that common interest may be explored.

Contract Research/Consultancy Projects

The University values working in partnership with external organizations, and has a strong track record in delivering research projects through contract research or consultancy agreements to meet the specific needs of businesses, industries, social enterprises, and the public sector.

External organizations are welcome to visit the HKU Scholars Hub to look for our researchers to explore opportunities of working together on contract research or consultancy projects. The HKU Scholars Hub is the University's online expertise directory, which makes HKU researchers and their research visible. It provides an expert finder for businesses, industries, social enterprises, the public sector, and interested student applicants to find HKU experts for contract research, consultancies, and postgraduate student supervision etc.

A contract agreement will be entered into for providing research service under specified negotiated conditions in exchange for the full reasonable identifiable costs, including overheads. In accordance with the University's guidelines, such agreements should be signed by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research) or his authorized representative(s) on behalf of the University.

The Research Services (RS) of the Registry and the Knowledge Exchange Office (KEO) assist our researchers in co-ordinating the review of draft contract research agreements and consultancy/service agreement for KE respectively to ensure that all the proposed terms and conditions are consistent with the relevant policies of the University, and in arranging the agreement to be signed by an authorized representative of the University once the terms and conditions are confirmed by all parties.

Knowledge Exchange Impact Projects

The Knowledge Exchange (KE) Funding Scheme for Impact Projects aims to support staff members to undertake KE projects that have the potential to create impact on society. Applications are normally invited once a year. The maximum bid for each project is HK$100,000, and proposals are considered on a competitive basis. Proposed KE projects may be technology-based or non-technology-related.

Joint proposals for interdisciplinary, collaborative KE projects among Faculties or between Faculties and non-Faculty-based units are strongly encouraged. Staff members are also strongly encouraged to explore external partnership opportunities and develop their proposals with external partners before submission.

Strategic Partnerships

Strategic partnerships must be aligned with the University's Strategic Development Plan. A strategic partnership may be discipline based that involves a Faculty, or broad based that involves several Faculties. A strategic partnership is expected to enable both sides to achieve clearly identified benefits beyond what each party could achieve on its own in order to pursue common goals. Considerable efforts are normally required to map out a shared vision, a detailed plan for collaboration, agreed outcomes, governance structure, monitoring mechanism and review process, etc.
