Presentation

Abstract:

ORCiD and SAGE Open are two new initiatives of the Libraries to support HKU researchers with a view to enhancing the visibility of their research to not only scholars but also potential collaborators in outside organizations, potential research postgraduate students, and interested members of the public.

ORCiD: This is an international initiative to create and use unique scholar identifiers for each scholar in the world. Universities, publishers, funding agencies, scholars, and anybody who search for them, can use ORCiDs to uniquely identify and retrieve data on scholars. This will be especially beneficial to authors with Chinese names that may be quite common. The Libraries will begin creating ORCiDs for HKU professoriate staff in December 2013.

SAGE Open: Agreement has been made with SAGE Open to publish 100 articles by HKU authors in SAGE Open. This peer reviewed journal is gold open access, which means the author, the institution or the funder pays an Article Processing Charge (APC), rather than readers paying subscriptions. HKU authors can now choose to publish in SAGE Open, as the APC for up to 100 articles will be covered under the aforementioned agreement. The resulting published peer reviewed article is available to everyone in open access. Articles may span the full spectrum of the social and behavioral sciences and the humanities. This is another initiative to promote open access (OA), following the Springer OA initiative done in the last triennium, which mainly covered the science and technology-related disciplines. OA journals can increase readership, enable readership amongst those who cannot afford subscriptions, and enable a faster cycle of, "research - publish - research".
