HKU Hatchery to Supply Quality Oysters to Farmers

Hong Kong’s 700-year-old oyster industry has faced many challenges, from red tides, heavy metal pollution and acidification to outdated growing methods, lack of new, young farmers and an irregular supply of poor-quality seeds. A research team led by Dr. Thiyagarajan Vengatesen, School of Biological Sciences has identified a quick-growing “highly disease-resistant” variant in southern China which has been successfully cultured and bred in the hatchery.

Lifting the Burden of Hopelessness

Probably no person has done more to prevent suicide in Hong Kong than Professor Paul Yip, Chair Professor (Population Health) at the Department of Social Work and Social Administration and, since 2002, Director of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention. The Centre has not only provided much needed data on trends and outcomes, but it has also collaborated with NGOs, government bureaus, coroners and other stakeholders on developing new prevention programmes.
